Concerning Violence: Film Screening and Readings from Franz Fanon
What happens when the violence of colonialism outlives colonial rule? This event brings Frantz Fanon’s ideas into conversation with the present, beginning with a screening of Concerning Violence, an archival footage documentary inspired by his writings. Readings from The Wretched of the Earth lead into a discussion on violence, identity, resistance, and the enduring legacies of colonialism in the Caribbean and beyond.
Readings and a conversation with Joannah Rae Reyes, Intersectionality Architect: Social + Gender + Disability Inclusion and Gregory Sloane Seale, Social Work Leader & Urban Violence Prevention Specialist. Moderated by Akins Vidale, Academic, Community and Political Activist
The Film:
Concerning Violence is a stark and often bleak exploration of African liberation struggles of the 1960s and 1970s. Pieced together through archival footage, musician and activist Lauryn Hill gives voice to Frantz Fanon’s writings as narrator. Documentary | 85 min | Directed by Goran Hugo Olsson (Sweden | Finland | Denmark| USA)
